Head for the coast!, Aug 15

On these long hot days, where better to go than to the coast to cool off but where should you head for?

This is our snapshot of the coastal resorts in the Pyrenees Orientales and what each has to offer:

Starting from the North

St. Cyprien Plage
Long sandy beach approximately 3 kilometres of sand, no shade, no restaurants but OK for picnics.

St. Cyprien Port
Very pretty small fishing harbour, lots of quayside restaurants, lots of boats for hire; some are self drive, but the bigger ones require a licence. Tel. 0468 21 30 66

Boca Del Tech
This is the mouth of the river Tech. Long sandy beach, one beach bar and quite a lot of nudists on this beach. To the northern end is Aqualand water park, which has water slides etc. There is a good restaurant near the car park to this beach.

Argeles Plage
Long sandy beaches (North and South) with plenty of attractions for the children. A traditional tourist resort with night time shopping, discos etc.

Le Racou
A smaller beach with more gravel than sand but the water is very clear good and for snorkeling. Also not as crowded as Argeles. Parking next to the beach and quite good restaurants in the village

Les Criques
A quiet bay with a stony beach just before Collioure (same exit off main road). Two beach restaurants. Park up near the camping entrance and walk down the creek to the beach

Collioure
Very pretty village with three small beaches. Lots of very good restaurants but also
quite expensive. Modern art galleries round every corner. Considered to be the local St.
Tropez. Has its own anchovy business. Well worth a visit.

Port Vendres
More of a Harbour and Marina than beaches but with very good restaurants and a fish Market. Deep Sea fishing boats are available to hire for Tuna fishing (although actually there are hardly any tuna left to fish)

Banyuls sur Mer
Pretty village with a small beach, some good shops and a world famous Aquarium.
